And it's mangled the smart quote in Neil's quoted message into a 
superscript 1---which probably means it's actually done nothing but 
declare a new encoding and then dumbly copy the bytes of the message in 
the old one.

Euch. I guess send-as-UTF8-by-default is still too much to ask for in 
2010. :/
