That's a bit of a different situation, as single-role games consoles
have been around as long as home computers. There are also a *lot* of
"killer apps" for them---you might really love mobile Safari on your
iPhone, but you can still get by with something lesser on a G1 or
whatever, and still use the same websites as your friends and such. That
doesn't really work with games.
I can see (I think) what you're getting at regarding them being
restricted, single-purpose devices made out of general-purpose
computers, but they live and die by their platform exclusives AFAIK.

AFAIK, they're tend to be about as powerful and better value on release,
then fall off pretty rapidly.

Certainly. If nothing else, there are popular, high-end PC-only games.
