I've never come across this, however it's perhaps interesting to note that
when entering a non–WEP (e.g., WPA-*) key, OS X's UI doesn't let you type a
'$' as the first character of the password.
I have had problems connecting to some older WiFi access points using WEP
from my MBP though. I'll try this next time :)
