A possible benefit of a single time capsule or single external disc  
per machine (vs a single high capacity box for the whole network) is  
that when the disc breaks you don't have to copy every byte of data  
from every single machine to the replacement disc, which is fairly  
horrible if you're talking about 4TB, especially if there's any  
wireless involved (!).

Also, you can manage upgrading the backup discs when a single machine  
gets its disc upgraded, as opposed to having to replace the whole big  
box backup.

Distributed vs Centralised, most of the standard pros and cons apply  
here.
