I also have a Drobo, first gen, but with latest firmware, and have run it almost 24/7 for over a year with no problems at all - it's amazing!
I think like any product there are some scary stories of people's product not working, but overall I get the impression that Drobos are fairly well regarded, if a little expensive.
I got my Drobo after the 4th out of 5 LaCie products I owed died, so I wouldn't steer clear of them.
