I've kitted my family out with a Netgear RAID box for their home network. There was a rebate offer for a free HD
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASDuo.aspx

It supports a whole bunch of different sharing formats (windows, mac, iTunes, ...), and you can enable ssh access to the linux system underneath if you're feeling adventurous.

The only complaint they've made of it is that the fan fitted in the case has an insanity inducing high-pitched whine.
Replacing it isn't too hard, the case can be disassembled with a few screws, but if you want it perfect out of the box then you'll be disappointed.

Regarding long-term problems I can't really report anything, as they've only had it a few months now.
