I think it all really depends on what type of data you mean by "things". I use rsync to keep two versions of a very large music library in sync. But I wouldn't use it to keep my contacts/bookmarks/keychain/Transmit favourites in sync between multiple macs/iPhone - that's a job for MobileMe (which it does brilliantly).
Dropbox is pretty elegant for syncing files. If you're looking to just sync those sorts of "things" between macs automatically, it's probably the path of least resistance.
