I should point out that there are also attempts by the free software lot 
to do this kind of thing, usually by transparent FLAC (which is also 
lossless) to MP3 conversion---unfortunately, none of which are "Apple 
native":

Although that sounds to be *very* hacky and probably annoying.

To be honest, I'm kind of suprised that iTunes hasn't got this built-in 
as an option when syncing to iPods/Phones. Perhaps they don't want to 
scupper sales of the ones with the biggest drives. ;)
