I'll try that from the 'old' PC, good idea.
 
I'll also try Jules' suggestion to see whether I really do pay or not
on repurchasing.   Of my 20+ apps only a handful are paid.  

The lesson is to always select the Store->Authorise this PC option before
plugging your iPhone into PC/Mac that you've not used for purchases or
syncing before.    You can have up to 5 PCs authorised at once.
