I backup to a mac mini with en external USB harddrive plugged in.

You can connect to the server with Finder (tell it it remember the  
remote password), and then pick the remote, external drive as the  
destination for TimeMachine, and then TM will try to autoconnect to  
the server everytime it wants to runs a backup.

It's pretty convenient, but I don't have a TimeCpasule to compare to.
