i just checked on the drive itself the spotlight index.

this is a 2.5 (yes just 2.5) gig partition and the spotlight directory is
804mgs.

That seems excessive?

it's why i've kept spotlight turned off on this particition but i do like
to search mail from time to time.

ironically on the main 250g disk the spotlight index is
238M	.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/48EC4C6C-DCA3-4D3A-9FB9-DD0A413CC55C
238M	.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores
