Hi folks,

UKRI have announced that they are changing their open access policy from 1st April 2022.
https://www.ukri.org/publications/ukri-open-access-policy/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Fpublications%2Fukri-open-access-policy%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cmindscdt-supervisors%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7Cfd7a68aaf65f44b7bda208d96226d1b3%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637648741123523781%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=a9%2F5UOpqlk3Wz1m0sRKNw2uXu%2BvRdwKLoiSEIzgPtuY%3D&reserved=0>

You will all be aware that all publications involving MINDS CDT students must include acknowledgment of funding:

o Long version (preferred): “This work was supported by the UK Research and Innovation Centre for Doctoral Training in Machine Intelligence for Nano-electronic Devices and Systems [EP/S024298/1]”

o Short version (if space-restricted): “This work was supported by UK Research and Innovation [EP/S024298/1]”

The policy change covers all peer reviewed articles published in journals, conferences/proceedings, etc. The only exception is monographs, which are unlikely outputs for us.

The key changes are:

Peer-reviewed research articles acknowledging UKRI funding which are submitted for publication from 1 April 2022 must be immediately open access (no publisher embargo) via a journal, publishing platform or repository, with a CC BY licence (or CC BY-ND as an exception).

Note that the University has a block grant for “gold” open access: https://library.soton.ac.uk/openaccess/agreements

If you publish a paper in a journal/conference that is not part of the University publisher agreements, then they should include the following text to support repository based open access with no embargo period:

‘For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising’

Where permitted by UKRI, you may replace ‘CC BY public copyright licence’ with ‘Open Government Licence’ or ‘CC BY-ND public copyright licence’.

This means that you must make the publication open access via Pure/ePrints with no embargo, but include this statement in the final version of the PDF that you produce. Please remember that this is the ‘final author version’ or ‘post print’ and not the PDF produced by the publisher with page numbers, etc.

Best,

Tim.
