<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Resilience is often characterised by the ability of a material, or individual in the organisational sense, to return to form after being strained. This naturally leads to discussions around the
characteristics and skills of individuals that may lead to resilience given organisational stresses and strains. However, individuals evidencing resilience in one context may not necessarily be so resilient in another, even within the same organisational environment.
Contextual factors are as important in the ability of any individual to cope as characteristics and skills.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">During this interactive session Nick will examine resilience from an interactional, dynamic perspective. Resilience within this framework is best understood as an iterative relationship between
the individual’s behaviours and the contextual consequences, which in turn are perceived by the individual, guiding future behaviours. Situations of adaptive and maladaptive coping will be explored, with inter- and intrapersonal factors being considered.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The session will consider how threat perception affects the decisions made in team contexts, the environment and the people in it can support better decisions and more collegial behaviours.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">By the end of the session the participants will be able to:

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">• describe how people vary in their social and emotional expression

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">• describe how contextual cues may be perceived by individuals according to experience

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">• describe frameworks enabling the understanding of resilience in terms of an individual – environmental interaction.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Nick is an Associate Clinical Psychologist based within the Department of Psychology at the University of Southampton, and director of OCH, a not for profit social enterprise serving people who
are homeless. He qualified in 1999 as a Clinical Psychologist from Southampton, having completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Southampton. Nick always combined clinical with academic roles, focusing on two main themes; organisational wellbeing
and reducing wealth disparity through serving people who are socially marginalised. He is also a founding member of the Faculty of Homeless Healthcare and consults regularly to government departments on the effective configuration of services for people who
are homeless. His current role at the University enables him to make use of his clinical training in a number of areas in addition to researching homelessness issues, including coaching bringing a psychological approach to excellent management and leadership.
