According to UNESCO, in 2015, the Asia region encompassed close to half of global expenditure on research and development (R&D, 42%) and for research outputs, Asia has been extremely prolific and growing quickly, with China leading the world in numbers of published research articles. </span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">But Asia is also a very diverse continent, representing many different languages and cultures and this diversity must be reflected in the way open science is implemented. International alignment, common standards and interoperability must be balanced with local priorities, needs and requirements. </span></span></div><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="white-space: pre-wrap; font-size: 15px;" class=""><br class=""></span></div><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="white-space: pre-wrap; font-size: 15px;" class="">At COAR, we believe it is important to have venues and opportunities that allow participants to focus on issues of local importance in their own region. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">Asia OA is a community hosted by COAR with the aim of supporting information sharing about open science policies and practices across the Asian continent. On a biannual basis, COAR along with a different local host, organizes an Asia OA meeting.
