</o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--></head><body lang=EN-GB link=blue vlink=purple><div class=WordSection1><p class=MsoNormal>I want to thank Stevan and Arthur for bringing their discussion on the Titanium Road to a seasonably peaceful conclusion, particularly in light of the fact that they continue to hold different views on the topic. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>I would like to think that GOAL can become a forum in which it is possible for members to hold and express divergent views, and no one is criticised for holding any particular point of view, especially those who are new to Open Access, and may as a result air views, or ask questions, that old hands view to be erroneous, wrong-headed or naïve. Challenging other peoples’ *<b>ideas</b>* is of course to be welcomed (and necessary), but we should not criticise the *<b>people</b>* who hold those views. The aim is for list members to share knowledge and experience of Open Access, and to work together to achieve OA, not to succumb to factional disputes.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Just to remind list members, the role of GOAL is to facilitate, “the discussion of Open Access practice and policy-making by the worldwide research community (in no order: researchers, universities, research institutions, research funding agencies, governmental research policy-makers and commercial entities) with the aim of enabling concrete, practical steps to be taken to achieve Open Access. Chief among these goals are techniques for increasing the amount of Open Access, as well as metrics of research usage and impact.”<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Arthur has mentioned a couple of times my preference for short posts.
