COAR and SPARC are pleased to share with you a new resource, “Good Practice Principles for Scholarly Communication”.
There is growing concern about the increasing concentration of control of research communication functions in the hands of a small number of players, whose objectives do not reflect the interests of scholarship. Last year, SPARC and COAR published a joint statement <https://www.coar-repositories.org/news-media/elsevier-acquisition-highlights-the-need-for-community-based-scholarly-communication-infrastructure/> related to this issue, and pledged to collaborate together and with others on actions to help set a strong foundation for ensuring that research communication services and infrastructure be better aligned with the aims and values of the research community.

To support this, the two organizations have developed seven good practice principles for the community to consider when thinking about service provision for scholarly communication services. The aim of these principles is to provide a framework to ensure that services are transparent, open, and support the aims and values of the scholarly community. You can find them attached below, and also on the SPARC <https://sparcopen.org/> and COAR <https://www.coar-repositories.org/activities/advocacy-leadership/open-science-and-sustainable-development/> websites.

These principles build directly on existing work, particularly, “Principles for Open Scholarly Infrastructures,” by Bilder, Lin, and Neylon. (http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1314859 <http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1314859>); we hope that these principles will help our community take a step forward by addressing a key prerequisite of a true global knowledge commons.

These principles represent a starting point for discussions in your community and are meant to be shared and built upon. We hope that you’ll find them useful, and we look forward to any and all feedback.
