<Apologies for cross posting>

Hello all,

Thursday already and Open Access Week is powering along, but there is no slowing down at the Office of Scholarly Communication at Cambridge University.

Blog - Flipping journals or filling pockets? Publisher manipulation of OA policies
Today’s blog considers what happens when a government changes its policies and invests significant amounts of money into the open access landscape. While most publishers have adapted their offerings to allow hybrid and permit researchers to make their work available, a notable few have created pricing structures that exploit the policy situation to their financial advantage. Announcement – 1 million downloads in 2017
What a week! On top of everything that is going on we are really (and we mean really) happy to announce that the University of Cambridge repository, Apollo has reached the 1 million download mark for 2017. In Open Access Week! Who would have guessed?

We were pretty close anyway, but this achievement is partially thanks to all the people who have been accessing Professor Stephen Hawking’s theses since Monday’s announcement. With 2.2 million hits on the Hawking record alone and visits from more than 750,000 unique IPs, we have managed to reach the one million mark. By the way, if you haven’t seen it, Professor Hawking's thesis is downloadable here https://doi.org/10.17863/CAM.11283 Thanks everyone!

Event - Helping Researchers Publish in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Tomorrow will be the final day of Open Access Week celebrations for the OSC, and we will be hosting our final event. Helping Researchers Publish in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics will be taking place from 9.00-13.15 at the Hauser Forum, and is aimed at bringing researchers, research support staff and those who are or have been involved in various aspects of publishing together with presentations and an opportunity for attendees to speak with the presenters over lunch (provided on the day). Find out more and book your place here: https://www.training.cam.ac.uk/osc/event/2246398

ORCID Competition
Also, don’t forget that today is the last day for University of Cambridge members to link their ORCID and Symplectic Elements profile for a chance to win a £150 Heffers voucher. We will be announcing the winner of this competition tomorrow morning, so if you haven’t already done so get cracking! For a quick tutorial visit the OSC OA Week 2017 page:http://bit.ly/ORCIDComp

Best wishes,

Danny
