[GOAL] Which subjects are most likely to charge APCs?

The tendency of open access journals to use APCs varies by subject. Our analysis indicates that medicine is the most represented subject among APC-charging journals (47% of our APC sample as compared to 23% overall in DOAJ) and humanities the least represented (14% of the journals in DOAJ but only 1% of the APC sample).

Remember that the majority of open access journals do not charge article processing fees (only 26% of the journals listed in DOAJ a year ago used this method). Our study of this method does not imply endorsement of APCs as a business model.
