Dear Colleague,
In 2015, ECS embarked on a bold commitment to Free the Science. Through this mission-driven initiative, we will open access to the entire ECS Digital Library–making all content from ECS journals freely available to all readers, while remaining free to publish for authors.
>From batteries to luminescent materials, the research output of our community is critical to the sustainability of our planet and the health of those who live on it. Yet even in today's global, digital environment, many scientists around the world struggle to access quality, reliable technical information.
As a long-time steward of the science, ECS has a duty to ensure that those who need to publish and access such key information are not hindered by subscriptions or article processing fees. Our vision of the future is one in which anyone–from the student in South Afric to the researcher in Romania–can freely publish and read the quality research they need to facilitate the next breakthrough.
Donate to support the ECS vision today.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001A5QCcIiitgCEFDzDy32C0CbCGZJjFJ2LR7WtNktfo8niHAZfOupltcCH4kUI0bDvs6P996HeN8YCHhWDBMY_yIB9lAjvPIW2ZjVtbybKeBKpvzHXk01By3CWKxYtSES2FfjU6eY-QlBaEd2wM92fUqmizrs9coUtCCiDLMDnoCcrdEQIXr7aA2HHsjrGdUD3aWUYs8vF4KqcTsx0GzSKtvch514fA5pPmmpnVk-IebBZBEw2cAcqtw==&c=wgeEl-UXcv6UstPC8oBY-RDbth5m-1xARqUNN1RWRqMhAZcj1VzbZA==&ch=CxLWpfYOTnzyIKOwXgK5RzM0VHApsLFtpRBnbxEgIuVQtu0PH-TOmQ==>
The ECS community is poised to make a global impact. Through complete open access we can better meet the needs of scientists and the spirit of our mission to advance and disseminate scientific research. The current scholarly publishing landscape may hinder scientists' ability to access and publish research by imposing cost-prohibitive subscriptions and/or article processing fees. This is especially problematic for scientists in the developing world, whose institutions often cannot afford such costs.
Free the Science Means
Unlimited Access
Under the Free the Science initiative, all ECS content will be free to read and free to publish. Our goal is to remove both subscriptions and article processing charges. Rather than burdening scientists with the cost of publishing research, we will pay for our publications with a dedicated fund supported by like-minded individuals and organizations.
Accountability
ECS is led by scientists, for scientists. We take seriously our role as a steward of electrochemical and solid state scientific research. As a nonprofit member-based society, ECS is accountable to you–the scientists, researchers, and engineers who comprise our membership, attend our meetings, and serve on our boards and committees.
High Quality
ECS will maintain the high peer review standards currently in place for our journals. The expertise of our editors, all esteemed leaders in their fields, will continue to direct our review process. The transition to open access will not change our high editorial standards.
We can make the Free the Science vision a reality–but we need your support to do it. Please give to the Free the Science Fund today.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001A5QCcIiitgCEFDzDy32C0CbCGZJjFJ2LR7WtNktfo8niHAZfOupltcCH4kUI0bDvs6P996HeN8YCHhWDBMY_yIB9lAjvPIW2ZjVtbybKeBKpvzHXk01By3CWKxYtSES2FfjU6eY-QlBaEd2wM92fUqmizrs9coUtCCiDLMDnoCcrdEQIXr7aA2HHsjrGdUD3aWUYs8vF4KqcTsx0GzSKtvch514fA5pPmmpnVk-IebBZBEw2cAcqtw==&c=wgeEl-UXcv6UstPC8oBY-RDbth5m-1xARqUNN1RWRqMhAZcj1VzbZA==&ch=CxLWpfYOTnzyIKOwXgK5RzM0VHApsLFtpRBnbxEgIuVQtu0PH-TOmQ==>

P.S. We caught a glimpse of the Free the Science vision during Open Access Week 2015: We made 100% of the content in the ECS Digital Library completely free to access and saw a 51% increase in JES usage compared to the same week in 2014. With your help, we can free the science every week of the year. Donate now.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001A5QCcIiitgCEFDzDy32C0CbCGZJjFJ2LR7WtNktfo8niHAZfOupltcCH4kUI0bDvs6P996HeN8YCHhWDBMY_yIB9lAjvPIW2ZjVtbybKeBKpvzHXk01By3CWKxYtSES2FfjU6eY-QlBaEd2wM92fUqmizrs9coUtCCiDLMDnoCcrdEQIXr7aA2HHsjrGdUD3aWUYs8vF4KqcTsx0GzSKtvch514fA5pPmmpnVk-IebBZBEw2cAcqtw==&c=wgeEl-UXcv6UstPC8oBY-RDbth5m-1xARqUNN1RWRqMhAZcj1VzbZA==&ch=CxLWpfYOTnzyIKOwXgK5RzM0VHApsLFtpRBnbxEgIuVQtu0PH-TOmQ==>
