Dear colleague,
The Cybermetrics Lab has just published the new 2013 edition of their
Ranking Web of World Universities (http://www.webometrics.info). In this
new edition, the coverage has been expanded again and the number of higher
education institutions ranked is over 21,200!.
North American universities still lead the tables (Harvard, Stanford and
MIT are the first three). Canadian universities are also performing very
well. In Europe, the British universities (Cambridge and Oxford) are in top
positions; on the contrary French universities are far from their
counterparts in the continent. In Latin America it is especially remarkable
the large number of Brazilian universities, led by Sao Paulo, ranked among
the best in the region. The Universities of Japan, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong
and Singapore lead the Asian ranking. Korea's ones are still lagging
behind their neighbors and the institutions from the Indian subcontinent
are far from even the Top 500.
The Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish Public Research
Council (CSIC) has been publishing the rankings twice a year (January and
July) since 2004. Its objective is to motivate and reinforce the role of
the university as a source and distributor of high quality web contents and
to promote and support open access initiatives.
