There is another narrative that I hear a lot - researchers are feckless, irresponsible prima donnas whose only responsibility is to their personal research activities and not to the scientific record.

There is undoubtedly some truth in both accounts, although it isn't necessary to fall foul of Godwin's law to make the point.
