Dear all,

Just a kind reminder: note the revised deadline for the Faculty
scholarship scheme.
It's nice to see that some of you have already sent applications.

As you apply, can you notify your head of group about your application,
since
I will rely on their input to rank ECS applications.

Best regards,
Luc

Dear PhD Supervisors
Following a request from colleagues funded by STFC, where the
recruitment timing means that all the good students will have gone by
mid-April, we are bringing forward the deadline for applications to the
faculty scholarships by 1 week to the 16th March. We will also bring
forward our panel meeting so that the final allocation is made by the
end of March.
Regards
Dave Shepherd

*Subject:* University £7k Scholarship Scheme

Dear PhD Supervisors,
Please find attached details of the University PGR Scholarship scheme
for this year. It provides £7k per year for 3 years and it to be used
to recruit additional, high quality PGR students who support the
strategic aims of the University, Faculty or Academic Unit. It is
emphasised that the £7k scholarships should be used as a way of levering
sources of external funding.
As a faculty we have been allocated 11 scholarships and we can also
apply for the 20 centrally allocated studentships. Please use the
"faculty scholarship proforma" to apply for 1 of the 11 faculty
scholarships and the "central uni scholarship proforma" to apply for one
of the 20 centrally allocated studentships. The two schemes are run
seperately as described below:
(1) Applications for the Faculty Scholarship should be sent to
dps at orc.soton.ac.uk <mailto:dps at orc.soton.ac.uk> by 23rd March. These
will firstly be ranked by the deputy head of research for your academic
unit. The top 10 from each academic unit will then be circulated
amongst the deputy heads or research and myself to rank against each
other. This panel will then meet on 19th April to sort out the
allocation of the 11 scholarships.
The criteria used for judgement will be:
academic quality of the student
how the project supports the strategic research priorities of the
university/faculty/academic unit
leverage of external funding
(2) Applications for the University Scholarship should be sent to
dps at orc.soton.ac.uk <mailto:dps at orc.soton.ac.uk> by 23rd March if FPAS
is the lead faculty for the bid. We ask that you consult with your head
of research group before making this application to ensure that only
high-quality bids are made. On receiving the applications I will need
to write a supporting statement as Director of Graduate School. If you
wish to write a statement of support, which I can then edit, please do
so. I will then forward applications to Jo James by 30th March as
required. These applications will be judged centrally and have
additional criteria which need to be met as described in the attached
Scholarship Scheme document and are aimed at (mostly) cross-Faculty bids.
If appropriate, you may consider applying for both awards with the same
project/candidate . Should you be awarded a faculty scholarship and
then subsequently earn a university scholarship for the same bid you
will be awarded the university scholarship and will will give the
faculty scholarship to the next highest ranked applicant.
Regards
Dave Shepherd
