Dear Fellows
I have been asked to circulate the email below.

Academic Mentors
The role of Academic Mentors was set up as to link up senior academic at the Turing and Turing students that are looking for impartial advice on academic matters.
The Expression of interest for Academic Mentors can be found here.<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.office.com%2FPages%2FResponsePage.aspx%3Fid%3Dp_SVQ1XklU-Knx-672OE-dvFCaTANolJvMnb7p7kkNVUQVQzRU9FQ0VWVDBBMk5RN0NWUVhIWDZBUy4u&data=04%7C01%7Csdd1%40soton.ac.uk%7C416f59070799453fd2dc08d9bee45cfb%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637750710287705038%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=%2Bfdsr%2B2O7T5dcEyLwLVLuA%2BdVmAvqFmTeJ1yFEgef7Q%3D&reserved=0> The first round of applications will close on 28th January 2022.

What is the purpose of this role?
Our team finds that often students would like to speak to a senior academic, outside of their supervisors, who can listen impartially to their academic situation. Whilst our team can support them with personal or administrative issues, we do not have the expertise to offer support on academic issues. Hence creating the role of an Academic Mentor, to act as a confidential sounding board for Turing Students who have any questions or concerns about academic matters that arise during their time at the Institute.

What is the time commitment?
Academic Mentors can indicate a set time each month or request that students get in touch to arrange a suitable time. Students are asked to email the mentors before their slot, so they can arrange for a F2F/Zoom/Teams meeting, depending on preference.
Our team suggested 1 hour as a minimum expected commitment per month; we wanted to be realistic and flexible as we know senior academics are all very busy and any help is most appreciated! We would not expect Academic Mentors to have to give extra time above the 1 hour and it is worthwhile managing the students expectations about the amount of time you can provide to them.

What does the role end?
The Academic mentor role will end at the same time as your Turing Fellowship. We plan to circulate a call for new mentors once per academic year. If for any reason you would like to not be a mentor any longer, please let our team know via email<mailto:academic-services at turing.ac.uk>.

What other support is available for students, if depending on the issue, they need to be redirect to someone else?
We would ask that students speak to the Academic Services team about non-academic matters, such as personal matters or those related to their welfare or administration. Students can submit an enquiry via the Student Resources page on Turing Complete (the Institute's intranet) or contact us via email and ask to arrange a meeting. Information on the welfare (pastoral) support available to students at the Turing can be found on Turing Complete or requested by our team.
If the student informs the Academic Mentor they do not feel comfortable raising the issue with our team (e.g. it may be feedback about a member of our team that they do not feel comfortable raising with us directly) then please advise them to speak to the HR team or make use of the Turing's Report & Support<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Freportandsupport.turing.ac.uk%2F&data=04%7C01%7Csdd1%40soton.ac.uk%7C416f59070799453fd2dc08d9bee45cfb%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C637750710287705038%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=umo%2BG3mB71N%2FQJHk7kDxdmiDDXmWkk8u%2Fev%2Fud%2F%2Fvgc%3D&reserved=0> service.
Please note if the issue requires immigration assistance (e.g. if the student is on a Tier 4 visa) we ask that you do not give any advice about immigration issues, as advice must be given by the students sponsor i.e. the International Office at their university. Please direct them to the Academic Services team first, if you are unsure.

If you have any other questions about the scheme, please do contact the Academic Services Team at academic-services at turing.ac.uk<mailto:academic-services at turing.ac.uk>
On behalf of our students, and our team, thank you for your support!

Best wishes,
Georgia
