Dear Fellows

To remind you, the deadline for this Call is Tuesday 3 September. If you decide to put in an application, please let me know.

Please see attached a call for applications for the inaugural Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (TCMF).

The Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights will bring together experts from across the university partner network and external institutions for a multi-day research event on a specific theoretical or methodological challenge. For this event, members of the Turing research base (including Turing Fellows, Turing Research Fellows, Research Engineering Group, Post-Doctoral Research Associates and Turing PhD students) will be invited to formulate proposals where they present one modern theoretical and/or methodological challenge, and set a plan and a team to start tackling it. The theoretical and methodological challenges can be drawn from any discipline in the remit of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Please note the following:

  * Applications for the Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights must be submitted via the online portal at https://ati.flexigrant.com/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fati.flexigrant.com%2F&data=01%7C01%7C%7C4acec016939d4401117208d71b1b1ddd%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=W%2FFKUZ8lwqG4hliEOr%2B6%2B554aYJyTPs7Gu2xdNLD8C8%3D&reserved=0>.
  * The lead proposer for a chosen challenge has the opportunity to assemble a team of 12 researchers and host the event at either The Alan Turing Institute or one of the Turing partner universities.
  * The closing date for applications is 03 September 2019.
  * The Turing research base will have the opportunity to vote on the two challenges that should be tackled, and to indicate interest in participating in the team tackling it.
  * The two Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights must take place by 04 May 2020.
  * We expect the most popular theoretical and methodological challenges to be the ones that have a clear pathway to impact in applied streams of work in Turing (e.g. grant applications, linking with the Data Study Groups, Special Interest Groups, etc)
  * The successful proposals will receive sufficient funding to /fully/ cover travel, subsistence, accommodation (and daycare costs as necessary) for the challenge team for a maximum term of 2 weeks.

For further information on the Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights, please refer to the call document attached. If you have any further queries, please contact Charlie Thomas (cthomas at turing.ac.uk<mailto:cthomas at turing.ac.uk<mailto:cthomas at turing.ac.uk%3cmailto:cthomas at turing.ac.uk>>) or the Theory & Methods Challenge Fortnights email (TCMF at turing.ac.uk<mailto:TCMF at turing.ac.uk>).

Best,

Susan
