In Advanced Search, allowed are % (matching exactly 1 character) or *
(matching 0 or any number of characters). Wildcards are only trailing.

So something like na* should match those words that start with Na.

What is not clear to me whether your chemical systems describe general
compositions (Sodiumtoluenesulfonate with an arbitray amount of crystal
water, e.g. CAS RN 1240939-71-2, Sodium(1+), aqua-,
4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1:1), C7 H7 O3 S . H2 O . Na, CAS RN 28573-41-3,
Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-methyl-, sodium salt, hydrate (2:2:1), C7 H8 O3 S .
1/2 H2 O . Na ,  and CAS RN 337511-98-5,  C7 H8 O3 S . x H2 O . Na,
Benzenesulfonic acid, 4-methyl-, sodium salt, hydrate (1:1:?)) or just the
exact mono-hydrate system: CAS RN 1240939-71-2.

If the latter, as a chemical information specialist, I strongly suggest to
use either standardized English IUPAC names or CAS names for your chemical
systems and in addition use either CAS Registry Numbers or InChI.

we like to realize something similar to

mysql> select * from eprint_system where system like '%na%';

but want to search for 'na-%' likewise ...

Currently just a search for the complete system string, like
'Item Status matches any of "User Workarea", "Under Review", "Live Archive"
AND System is "binary oceanic"',
is successful ...
