[EP-tech] backporting a fix from master to 3.3

Hi EPrintsers,

 

This commit
<https://github.com/eprints/eprints/commit/22fb90907803f9923811ebfdde4052955
e415e4a> was merged to master two years ago, but wasn't ported to the 3.3
branch, and so was missed in the 3.3.12 release.

 

Can it please be back-ported to the 3.3 branch and included in the 3.3.13
release?
