Thanks for the tip - I crowbarred it onto our dev server - but will try your method on the live one - and let you know.
And thanks Seb - this resolved the issue.
It doesn't clean our data up - which is the next hurdle :o)

checksum errors on the bazaar can be resolved by going to the developer
tools tab (on the admin bazaar page). Then select "edit" and then "save
and return" - this should generate a new checksum for you (you don't
need to actually edit anything).
N.B. I have used this trick to allow me to disable & uninstall stuff but
I have not tried it for an upgrade so please let me know if it works for
that too.
