Further to Tim's advice, try to convert images on the server, from the 
command line and see what you get (black images or not). You can usually 
run: convert <input> <output> eg "convert pub.pdf images.jpg".

If you get black images from PDF documents, then try to upgrade 
Ghostscript. If you get black images when generating JPEG but not when 
generating PNG, perhaps a problem with libjpeg etc.
