sure I did it as eprints:www-data, I forgot to change and just copied 
from the wiki when writing the email :)

but I can see the file is eprints:eprints.. anyway, www-data is in the 
eprints group (and the eprint user is in the www-data group), so it 
should work anyway., shouldn't?

I'll redo chown/chmd again, to see if something change.
