Dear All,
Please see below the call for abstracts for the
<http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/BCSWomen/> BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium 2010
and encourage all good female students to participate …
This one-day event has grown out of the BCSWomen online network that
was set up by Dr Sue Black in 2001. It is a great opportunity for
(sometimes isolated) female computing and IT students to see/meet/chat
to lots of other female students, talk about their interest in CS and
be inspired by keynote speakers and of course each other.
Part of this event is a Poster Competition for all women studying on a
computer-related taught degree programme (both undergraduates and
taught postgraduates). The full call is below, but I ask that you
consider mentioning this especially to your female tutees and project
students. Little work is required for the poster contest, each entry
will have the opportunity to win one of the cash prizes, and as in
previous years we hope to cover travel expenses for all presenters.
If you, or your students, have any questions please send them in my direction.
Many thanks,
Miki

BCSWomen Undergraduate Lovelace Colloquium 2010
Call for Abstracts
The Undergraduate Lovelace Colloquium is an annual one-day event
organised by BCSWomen for female students of computing and IT. Each
year it comprises a number of talks from industry and academia, a
poster contest for students and, of course, social activities. Held
previously in the University of Leeds, in 2010 it will be located in
Cardiff University.
Although the day is primarily aimed at undergraduate students the
event is also open to those studying on taught masters programmes.
Women and girls studying in schools and colleges are welcome to come
along, but not to enter the poster contest - please contact the
organisers for more information about attendance from schools.
Full details of the 2010 Colloquium can be found at
http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/BCSWomen/
Poster Competition
All female students currently studying for a taught degree
(undergraduate or postgraduate) in a computer-related discipline are
invited to submit an abstract to the Poster Competition. To enter
simply submit a 250 word plain text abstract describing what your
poster will be about.
Posters may cover any topic within the field of computer science
and/or interdisciplinary studies connected to computing or IT.
Posters may be based on a project you’re currently undertaking at
university, something related to your place of work, or something else
you are interested in and think others would like to know more about
too! If you would like to submit an abstract but are having difficulty
in coming up with a poster topic look at your Departmental webpage and
see what computing research is being done in your University: your
local researchers will almost certainly be happy to talk about their
work with you (and get extra publicity in the process).
If you're still stuck for ideas, drop us an email on
bcswomen at cs.cardiff.ac.uk (but not the day before the deadline) and
we'll see what we can do.
Application Information
To apply for the poster contest, send an abstract by email to
bcswomen at cs.cardiff.ac.uk by Monday 1st February 2010. The abstract
should be no more than 250 words describing the work you will present
(no images, just plain text).
You also need to include the following information in your email:
− Full name
− School/Department and University
− Your degree and current year of study
− Contact address
All submissions will be reviewed by the organisers. If your poster is
accepted, you will be notified by the end of February 2010, and a
display area will be available to you on the day of the conference.
The accepted abstracts will also be combined into a proceedings to be
distributed to all attendees on the day.
Guidance on making scientific posters is available at a number of
places on the web. As a starting point you may wish to look at:
− North Carolina State University guide to creating an
effective poster – http://www.ncsu.edu/project/posters/NewSite/
− The American Psychological Society’s guide to creating an
undergraduate research poster –
http://www.the-aps.org/careers/careers1/Undergrad/glas.htm
Prizes and travel cost assistance
Prizes (financial) will be awarded to the best posters.
Further details of prizes and travel bursaries will be posted on the
colloquium web site as they are arranged. So check back regularly to
keep up-to-date.
In previous years we have been able to fund travel (and where
necessary, overnight accommodation) for all poster presenters, and we
hope to do the same in 2010.
Key Dates
Poster abstract submission deadline: Monday 1st February 2010
Poster acceptance notification: Friday 5th March 2010
Colloquium: Thursday 8th April 2010
