A MESSAGE FROM ECSS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello ECS Students,

It is Olivia Ojuroye, your ECSS Academic Secretary of 2013/2014!

Another academic year has fallen upon us, with which brings the friendly welcoming of ECS Freshers into our department.
With celebrations of Freshers week done and dusted, now the work has started and I hope that you are all keeping the spirits up!

We have the first ECSS Academic Talks of the year starting next week, and I hope they will be just as well attended as last year. Winton Capital Management and Microsoft were very impressed when they came to visit us last summer. I would thoroughly like to hear that other companies this academic year say the same.

ECSS' first ECSS Academic Talk is with Teach First, Tuesday the 15th of October, 13:00-14:00. B53/Room 4025, free lunch is provided.
"Teach First recruit graduates and experienced professionals onto a two-year Leadership Development Programme and provide them with the skills, experience and opportunities to become inspiring teachers and leaders in the classroom and beyond. Teach First recognise the importance of opening the eyes of young people to STEM careers and training more teachers in STEM disciplines."

For those new at ECS, ECSS Academic Talks are talks given by companies to ECS students in our department. The companies who visit can be hardware companies and software companies, but they can also be non-technology companies too - these talks show you a range of what your degree can offer you. ECSS Academic Talks take place in lunchtime slots or after-lecture evening slots; they can also be accompanied with a free food and some free company merchandise.
Asking questions, networking, and eating the free food on offer is highly encouraged.
Attending an ECSS Academic Talk could give you an opportunity to make contacts and it can even lead to an internship!

Whether you are interested in using your degree to teach or just curious as to what Teach First have to say - come along, you are welcome!

To prevent this being an onslaught of text in one email, I will give you the dates of all the ECSS Academic Talks this term at a later date.

Get medicine, have a cup of tea (or coffee if that is your preference), and remember that Handin date and time!

Best Wishes,

Olivia Ojuroye
