Dear All,

For the new MSc students we will once again use the Choices system to facilitate project allocation. It remains the expectation that all teaching staff will supervise MSc projects over the summer and provide guidance for the ELEC6259 courseworks in semester
2.

The new Choices Form is now available at:
https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/539

We ask all teaching staff to enter at least 6 Options (i.e. examples of MSc projects that you can supervise). Please provide sufficient detail for students to get a feel for the scope of the project, ideally including 'tools and techniques'. This is also an
opportunity to update your Options.

The deadline for completing this is Thursday 9 December 2021.

Please see below for more detail. We will contact new staff separately. Thanks very much for your assistance.

Best regards,
Maurits de Planque
Nicolas Green
Oliver Bills

ps - if you feel you should not have to supervise MSc projects, please contact the Head of School asap

More information about the allocation procedure:

1) An Option is a description of a project. Options should be seen as examples of projects that you can supervise. Please provide sufficient detail for students to get a feel for the scope of the project, including ’tools and techniques’. Also identify the
MSc programmes for which the project is suitable.

2) Once students have been allocated to you, you are expected to make every effort to agree on a project. It does not have to be one of your Options in the Choices system.

3) The project coordinator and programme leaders will review the number of Options with respect to the size of the various MSc cohorts. The relevant programme leader could ask you to make some of your Options available to their cohort.

4) Students should not contact potential supervisors until the allocation has been made. Prior to allocation, programme leaders may contact you if their students have questions about your Options.

5) The students will have access to the Choices system after it closes for supervisor edits, and will then have several weeks (including the Christmas break) to select multiple Options from different supervisors. Programme leaders will discuss cohort-specific
Options with their students in the week of January 10th.

6) The initial student-supervisor matching will be performed late January, aiming at an even spread of students over supervisors. Programme leaders will then refine this preliminary allocation.

=======================
More information about the Choices system:

1) The Choices system is used to facilitate MSc project allocation. Each supervisor is asked to put at least 6 "Options" into the Choices database - examples of projects you can supervise. Students will use these Options to help them find supervisors which
match their interests.

2) The Choices system cannot prevent students from other cohorts selecting your Options. Programme leaders will explain that your selection of MSc cohorts should be seen as very strong recommendations.

3a) If you entered Options into the system last year, they have been carried over and this is an opportunity for an update.

3b) If you did not supervise MSc projects last year, you need to create at least 6 Options now. New academics will receive additional information about project supervision.

The link to the 21/22 MSc Form in the Choices system is:
https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/539
(login with your iSolutions user name and password)

>From this screen, you can edit your 21/22 Options as copied from 20/21 and add new Options. If you have problems accessing the form, after logging in, go directly to the above URL again. If you continue to have problems, please contact Oliver Bills.

4) If you wander around the Choices system, please do not edit any information regarding Part III projects or past MSc years. The top of the screen ( "Home > Forms > Current Forms > ....." ) should show "ECS MSc Choices 2021-2022" and not “ECS Part III Project
Allocation" or "ECS MSc Choices 2020-2021”

5) Any 'Resources' that you attached to your 20/21 Options were not copied over to your 21/22 Options. Unfortunately you will have to add these again. You can view your 20/21 Options (with their 'Resources') when you click on "My Forms" and then scroll down.
