Dear MSc project supervisors,
This is just a reminder that the MSc projects started last week. Below you can find the message that was sent to the students last Monday.
Students are asked to submit a Project Brief by next Monday 21 June. This is a summary of the final plan for their MSc project. It is not marked, but it serves as a record of what was agreed at the start of the project.
The marks and feedback for the ELEC6259 Poster and Project Plan have been released. If there has been no change to the scope of the project, you can just ask your students to summarise their ELEC6259 Project Plan and submit this as the COMP6200 Project Brief.
All information is on the COMP6200 Notes pages:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/
Best regards,
Maurits & Oli

Dear MSc students,
You have now all completed your exams, and we very much hope that these went well. Most of you have also finished your ELEC6259 poster peer-assessment exercise. If you have not done so already, please submit this peer-assessment in the coming days.
Your lecturers are currently marking all your work, and all these marks then have to be checked. The release of the semester 2 marks is Thursday 8 July.
The MSc Project started today, Monday 7 June. You can find the schedule and other useful information here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/
*Please read this carefully*
We would like to highlight the following:
_______
1) Project management
The supervision expectation is that there will be weekly meetings. Please arrange such meetings with your supervisor. Note that most supervisors are currently very busy with marking, so there may be a delay in their response. If you have trouble contacting your supervisor, please tell your programme leader.
The University is planning to make meeting rooms available on campus. The details are not known yet, but it may soon be possible to meet on campus in bookable rooms (rather than online in Teams etcetera).
_______
2) Project Brief submission - Monday 21 June
The Project Brief documents the final plan for your project, as agreed between you and your supervisor. You may have refined your research plan since you submitted the ELEC6259 Project Plan coursework, and your supervisor will give feedback, so this Project Brief should present the final plan for your project. See the Notes<https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/> pages for more detail.
_______
3) ECS facilities
ECS remote computing services<https://sotonproduction.service-now.com/serviceportal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0063686> are described on the Notes<https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/> pages, including the ECS GPU Service.
The B16 project lab<https://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/hardware-projects-laboratory> is open for MSc projects involving hardware work. The software lab<https://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/software-projects-laboratory> on level 2 of B16 is available as study space for all ECS MSc students. You need an induction, and you have to book. More information is on the COMP6200 Notes<https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/> pages.
The B59 Workshop / MakerSpace can carry out mechanical work for your project.
_______
4) Project budget
All students have a budget of up to £200 which you can use for anything you directly require for your project, such as hardware items or software, with agreement from your supervisor.
Normally everything has to be ordered through the University, but because the campus has not fully re-opened yet, the Finance department has agreed to an alternative procedure, which is described on the Notes<https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/> pages ("MSc Project Purchasing 20/21” link).
For budgetting reasons, we request you to submit reimbursement claims by the middle of July. As this is about a month into the project, this timing is also sensible project management. It is fine to submit a second claim, for any follow-on items, later in the summer.
_______
5) Second examiners
We are working on the second examiner allocation. When this is announced, you could send your Project Brief to your second examiner to introduce yourself. However, there is no contact with the second examiner until the start of the demonstrations (see the project schedule).
_______
6) Any questions
It is very important to plan your project well, and to stick to the execution of your plan. As it is a research project, you and your supervisor may well decide, after you have started your project work, to change the objectives or the methodology somewhat. For all of this, communication with your supervisor, which includes regular meetings, is key.
Your supervisor will be able to answer technical questions about your project. If you have any other concerns, please inform your tutor or your programme leader or the ECS senior tutors (stutor at ecs.soton.ac.uk<mailto:stutor at ecs.soton.ac.uk>).
Note that these University pages are still being updated:

________
We wish you all the best for your MSc Project. Please do come to the campus to use the facilities, incl. general study space<https://library.soton.ac.uk/studyspace>, and to meet your fellow students.
