Dear all,

We hope the first week of term has gone well for you and know this is a
busy time in the academic year. A big thank you to all those of you who
have already completed your MSc project marking.

For those that haven't, this is a reminder that the deadline for completing
independent marking and moderation is Monday the 19th of October, at the
latest. This includes late submissions, the majority of which should have
been submitted now, as this is a requirement for them to be completed by
the Project Board which takes place on the week commencing the 9th of
November.

You can access your projects for this year here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/e_marking/assess/COMP6200/1920/

If you have not started marking yet, please see the original email below
for a reminder of the marking procedures and changes that have been
implemented this year.

By not making the deadline of the 19th of October, especially if there are
AI issues, the need for a project to go to a third examiner or any other
issues, this will mean it cannot be resolved in time for the board and the
student will not be able to be awarded in the normal time frame, with
repercussions for their employment.

For projects which have been submitted late for which you do not think you
will be able to make the 19th deadline, please get in contact.

Any outstanding TurnItIn reports will be available by Monday - let us know
if you cannot find the Turnitin report for your students after this point.

Best wishes,

Oli and Maurits

Original message:

Dear all,

All students who did not take referral exams have now submitted their MSc
projects and they are now ready for marking at
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/e_marking/assess/COMP6200/1920/

For each project where you are a supervisor or second examiner, you must
complete the following:

1) Completing your independent marking form

2) Once both independent marking forms from the examiner and supervisor are
complete, agree a final mark where possible. It is the responsibility of
the supervisor to contact the second examiner.

3) Completing the moderation form (there is a moderation form for both
examiner and supervisor, both of which must be completed)

All marking and moderation must be complete by *Monday 19th of October*.
The marking must be completed by these deadlines to allow for any third
examination where necessary and for the programme leader reviews to take
place prior to the November Board of Examiners.

Marking of these projects is done through the e_marking system, and your
projects that you supervise and examine can be found here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/e_marking/assess/COMP6200/1920/

Updates to the process this year:

We would like to draw your attention to a number of changes this year:

1) There will be no printed hardcopies of reports made available
2) The academic integrity score will no longer be filled in automatically -
the supervisor will need to click the 'Plagiarism Check' link in the
Academic Integrity section, click 'MSc Dissertation', then 'View', and
then find your students submission in the list. Clicking on the submission
will bring up the full Turnitin report. The supervisor is required to
review the report and complete the score.
3) You may find that there is a significant match with the student’s own
Research Review (from the Project Preparation module), which you will need
to exclude (click the Match Overview on the sidebar, then click the
relevant match of the students own work, then Exclude Sources). Students
were given permission to re-use content from their Research Review this
year, so this does not count as recycling.

4) If there is an academic integrity issue, we are trialling a new system
to handle Academic Integrity issues (high Turnitin similarity index, or
other concerns). Rather than emailing the Academic Integrity Officer, you
will be directed to complete a form. It would probably be helpful for you
to keep the Turnitin report open while you do this.
5) The moderation procedure has changed. Where marks differ by more than 6%
and an average is not taken, the supervisor and examiner must write a
moderation statement with reference to the students work as to how the
final mark was agreed. This must be entered by the supervisor and agreed by
the examiner on their appropriate moderation forms.

The full marking procedures and details can be found here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/procedures.php

Thank you all for your support of our MSc students over the Summer and for
all the work you have put in.

We welcome those who are new to marking MSc projects this year, and would
encourage them to ensure they are familiar with the procedures as
documented above and to seek any support through the process from friendly
colleagues in the first instance.

Best wishes,

Oli Bills
