Dear all
This is a reminder that the deadline to complete your options in the Choices system is TODAY, Thursday November 28th.
The full details of the process can be found in the attached email below and access is at the following link:

Programme leaders will be reviewing the Options for their Cohort tomorrow, Friday 29th November.
If you have received this follow-up email, this means that you are on the list of people expected to be supervising or
examining MSc projects. If you believe this not to be the case and you have received it by mistake, please let us know
immediately.
Regards
Nicolas, Oli, Maurits

Dear All,
The new Choices Form is now available at:
https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/450
This year we require everybody to enter at least six Options (i.e. examples of MSc projects that you can supervise). Please
provide sufficient detail for students to get a feel for the scope of the project.
The deadline for completing this is Thursday 28 November 2019.
Please consider Options for the MSc Artificial Intelligence students, as this is a very large cohort of 130 students. Last
year, many CS and EEE academics offered machine learning related projects, which was very helpful.
Please see below for more detail. We will contact new staff separately.
Best regards,

More information about the allocation procedure:
1) An Option is a description of a project. Options should be seen as examples of projects that you can supervise. Please
provide sufficient detail for students to get a feel for the scope of the project.
2) Once students have been allocated to you, you are expected to make every effort to agree on a project. It does not
have to be one of your Options in the Choices system.
3) The project coordinator and programme leaders will review the number of Options with respect to the size of the
various MSc cohorts. The relevant programme leader could ask you to make some of your Options available to their
cohort.
4) Students cannot contact potential supervisors until the allocation has been made. Prior to allocation, programme
leaders may contact you if their students have questions about your Options.
5) The students will have access to the Choices system after it closes for supervisor edits, and will then have several
weeks (including the Christmas break) to select multiple Options from different supervisors. Programme leaders will
discuss cohort-specific Options with their students in the week before the Christmas break.
6) The initial student-supervisor matching will be performed in January, aiming at an even spread of students over
supervisors. Programme leaders will then refine this preliminary allocation

More information about the Choices system:
1) The Choices system is used to facilitate MSc project allocation. Each supervisor is asked to put at least six "Options"
into the Choices database - examples of projects you can supervise. Students will use these Options to help them identify
supervisors which match their interests.
2a) If you entered Options into the system last year, they have been carried over and this is an opportunity for an update.
2b) If you did not supervise MSc projects last year, you need to create at least six Options now. New academics will
receive additional information about project supervision.
The link to the 19/20 MSc Form in the Choices system is:
https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/450
(login with your iSolutions user name and password)
>From this screen, you can edit your 19/20 Options as copied from 18/19 and you can add new Options. If you
have problems accessing the form, after logging in, go directly to the above URL again. If you continue to have problems,
please respond to this email.
3) If you wander around the Choices system, please do not edit any information regarding Part III projects or past MSc
years. The top of the screen ( "Home > Forms > Current Forms > ....." ) should show "ECS MSc Choices 2019-2020" and not
"ECS Part III Project Allocation" or "ECS MSc Choices 2018-2019"
4) Any 'Resources' that you attached to your 18/19 Options were not copied over to your 19/20 Options. Unfortunately
you will have to add these again. You can view your 18/19 Options (with their 'Resources') when you click on "My Forms"
and then scroll down.
5) For the new MSc Internet of Things, please review your cohort selection. Options suitable for EMECS students: please
tick "MSc Embedded Systems".
