Dear all
Please note that this year (for the first time) students were asked to include a Statement of Originality with their report. I’m aware that this is causing a substantial inflation in similarity scores. The submission requirements will be changed for next year to ensure this does not happen again.
You may notice that there are matches to the student’s own Project Preparation report. When clicking on matching text, this will bring up an excerpt of the matching submission, with an icon looking like two pages side-by-side. Clicking on this icon will bring up the full source view. You can scroll through this to check the name at the top. I am happy to disregard any matches with the student’s own Project Preparation report.
Please take a quick look at your students’ Turnitin reports ASAP and flag up any potential problems to me. Any with a match of >15% need me to comment on this in the system before marks can be released, so please drop me an email even if you don’t think there’s a problem; clicking on the email link on the marking form will pre-populate an email to me with the student’s details and similarity index.
Also, a reminder that Turnitin is just a tool for identifying plagiarism in text. Any other issues (e.g. plagiarism of source code/designs, falsification, failure to obtain ethical approval) will not be detected, so please look out for those too!
My rough guide to AI is at https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/ai/
Thanks

Subject: [COMP6200-supervisors] MSc Project Marking and Procedures
Dear all,
All students who did not take referral exams have now submitted their MSc projects and they are ready for marking.
The dissertations have been printed and should have been delivered to you or your group. If you have not received yours yet, please check with the school reception, and failing that, contact me.
(Referring students are submitting next Thursday and these reports will be printed and made available for the start of October)
For each project where you are a supervisor or second examiner, you must complete the following:
1) Completing your independent marking form
2) Once both independent marking forms from the examiner and supervisor are complete, discussing the final mark with the other. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to contact the second examiner.
3) Completing the moderation form (there is a moderation form for both examiner and supervisor, both of which must be completed)
Independent marking must be completed by *Monday 15th of October*. The moderation forms by both supervisor and examiner must be completed by *Monday 22nd of October*.
The marking must be completed by these deadlines to allow for any third examination where necessary and for the programme leader reviews to take place prior to the November Board of Examiners.
Marking of these projects is done through the e_marking system, and your projects that you supervise and examine can be found here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/e_marking/assess/COMP6200/1718/
The full marking procedures and details can be found here: https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/procedures.php
Thank you all for your support of our MSc students over the Summer and for all the work you have put in.
Best wishes,
Oli Bills
MSc Project Co-Ordinator
