Dear All,

This is a reminder that you can update your Options (examples of projects you can supervise) until Monday 3 December. Thanks to those of you who have done this already.

This year, as a trial, we asked the students whether they had any ideas for MSc projects. The responses to this survey are attached. If you are interested in supervising one of these proposed projects, please include it as one of your Options in the Choices system:

Best regards,
Oli / Nic / Maurits

Dear Colleagues,

You are receiving this email because you are available for MSc Project supervision in 18/19.

Short summary:
- we are again using the Choices system to facilitate MSc project allocation
- the new Choices Form is "ECS MSc Choices 2018-2019" (#409), accessible at https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/409
- your information was copied from the 2017-2018 MSc Form (#356)
- this is an opportunity to update your Form entries ("Options" - i.e. examples of projects you can supervise); if you did not have 17/18 Options, please enter your 18/19 Options now
- the deadline for updates and new entries is * 2 December 2018 *, so that the system can be opened up for student browsing on Monday 3 December
- the students will submit their choice of Options (i.e. their selection of supervisors) after the Christmas break

Please consider Options (project examples) for the MSc Artificial Intelligence students, as this is our largest cohort this year.

See below for more detail. If you experience any problems, please contact <O.Bills at soton.ac.uk><mailto:comp6200-supervisors at ecs.soton.ac.uk>

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards,
Oliver Bills

More information about the allocation procedure:

0) If you believe you should not supervise MSc projects this year, you need to contact the HoS now.

1) An Option is either a description of a specific project, or it can briefly outline a general research theme. Options should be seen as examples of projects that you can supervise.

2) Once students have been allocated to you, you are expected to make every effort to agree on a project. It does not have to be one of your Options in the Choices system.

3) The Project Coordinator will review the number of Options with respect to the size of the various MSc cohorts. The relevant programme leader could ask you to make some of your Options available to their cohort.

4) Students cannot contact potential supervisors until the allocation has been made. Prior to allocation, programme leaders may contact you if their students have questions about your Options.

5) The students will have access to the Choices system from Monday 3 December 2018, and will then have 5 weeks (including the Christmas break) to select 8 Options from at least 8 different supervisors. Programme leaders will discuss cohort-specific Options with their students in the week before the Christmas break.

6) The initial student-supervisor matching will be performed during the exam period by the Choices system, aiming at an even spread of students over supervisors. Programme leaders will then refine this preliminary allocation. The final allocation should be announced in the first weeks of semester 2.

More information about the Choices system:

1) The Choices system is used to facilitate MSc project allocation. Each supervisor is asked to put 4 to 6 "Options" into the Choices database - examples of projects or research areas you can supervise. Students will use these Options to help them find supervisors which match their interests.

2a) If you entered Options into the system last year, they have been carried over and this is an opportunity for an update.

2b) If you did not supervise MSc projects last year, you need to create your 4-6 Options now. New academics will receive information about project supervision from the Director of Assessment, Nicolas Green.

The link to the 18/19 MSc Form in the Choices system is:
https://choices.soton.ac.uk/forms/author/409
(login with your iSolutions user name and password).

>From this screen, you can edit your 18/19 Options as copied from 17/18 and add new Options. If you have problems accessing the form, after logging in, go directly to the above URL again. If you continue to have problems, please respond to this email.

3) If you wander around the Choices system, please do not edit any information regarding Part III projects or past MSc years. The top of the screen ( "Home > Forms > Current Forms > ....." ) should show "ECS MSc Choices 2018-2019" and not "ECS Part III Project Allocation" or "ECS MSc Choices 2017-2018"

4) Any 'Resources' that you attached to your 17/18 Options were not copied over to your 18/19 Options. Unfortunately you will have to add these again. You can view your 17/18 Options (with their 'Resources') when you click on "My Forms" and then scroll down.

5) Options suitable for EMECS students: please tick "MSc Embedded Systems"
