Dear MSc Supervisors,
This is a reminder that the MSc project commences today. The full timetable
and details can be found on the module homepage at
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200
Note we have reintroduced the non-marked assessment this year in the form
of a project brief which is submitted at the end of June. This is just an
agreement of project, goals and scope between supervisor and student, in
the same way as the undergraduate projects work. After this, you just need
to confirm you are happy with the project as stated and potentially provide
feedback on the student's understanding of the project.
Let me known if you have ant questions or problems and best wishes over the
Summer,
Below is the email which has been sent out to all students, for your
reference:

Dear all,
I hope you have all done well in your exams and have now had a bit of time
to recover.
This is a reminder that the MSc Projects start today, Monday 11th June. The
complete guidelines for the project including the timetable can be found on
the module homepage: https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/
Hopefully you have already had a chance to meet with your supervisor and
talk about the next stages of your project. If not, you can find your
allocated supervisor on your ECS profile page.
Throughout the Summer, you should try to meet with your supervisor once per
week in this initial phase of work and then regularly over the next two
months. If you have any question regarding your project you need to discuss
this with your allocated supervisor.
If you have any questions about the allocations, you need to contact your
respective MSc Programme Leader - a listing of which can be found on the
module homepage here: https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/
Your first deadline is Thursday 28th June 2018 where you are expected to
submit a project brief. This is a one sheet A4 document which includes your
project title, your name and your supervisor's name and an agreed project
description, including the problem you are solving, your goals and the
scope of the project. More information can be found on the project page at
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/comp6200/
You have a personal budget of up to £200 which you can use for anything you
directly require for your project, such as components, consumables or
software, with agreement from your supervisor. You can find out more
details of the process and how to use your budget here:
https://secure.ecs.soton.ac.uk/notes/ellabs/Purchasing-related/
You are required to demonstrate the results of your project both to your
supervisor and your second examiner (not necessarily at the same time). A
three week period around the end of practical work, as detailed in the
project timetable, has been allotted for this purpose. It is your
responsibility to arrange a demonstration meeting with your second examiner
at this time and also arrange a practical wrap-up and demonstration meeting
with your supervisor.
For students not taking referral examinations (in August), the start date
for the MANDATORY demonstrations will be Monday the 20th of August, and the
final dissertation hand-in date will be Thursday 6th of September 2018 at
16:00. The demonstration can take place any time after the 20th of August,
as agreed with your supervisors.
University procedure requires that ethical approval be sought before the
start of the project. If your project requires ethical approval, you should
begin the process as soon as possible. You can find details of the ethics
process here:
https://sharepoint.soton.ac.uk/sites/fpas/governance/ethics/default.aspx
Your first point of contact for anything project related should be your
supervisor. If you are having issues getting in contact with or receiving
support from your supervisor, please contact your programme leader.
If you would experience any academic or personal problems during your
project, please contact your tutor / programme leader or one of the senior
tutors (Andy Gravell, Age Chapman or Jules Field at stutor at ecs.soton.ac.uk)
when these problems arise - do not wait until the dissertation submission
deadline.
Best wishes,
Oli Bills
