[C-IoT Management] C-IoT Update (+ some quick actions)

Website

  *   Having done a Pure ‘dive’ and consultation into IoT related projects (both current and over the past decade), I’ve started to populate the research pages linked from https://www.c-iot.ecs.soton.ac.uk/research with this information. Please take a look, and let me know if you disagree with the classification/inclusion of a project(s), or think that there are any projects missing from the different pages? Please also raise this at your next research group meeting, so that others in your group can feed-in if they’re not currently represented? Going forward, let me know if you or a colleague get a new IoT-related project funded


  *   Tell me if you (or a colleague) are currently recruiting for an IoT-related PhD studentship or postdoc, and I can help by advertising on https://www.c-iot.ecs.soton.ac.uk/join


  *   Most of you are probably scheduled to meet with the copywriter after the Easter break (I’ll have sent you a meeting request already if so), who will be writing text for these pages. However, I’ll still need photos/videos to go along with the text to make it as engaging as possible. Please send me any photos or videos related to our IoT research areas<https://www.c-iot.ecs.soton.ac.uk/research>, so that I can start collating!


  *   I was also hoping to get the video content recorded and up there, but successive lockdowns and restrictions on people going to campus haven’t made that practical for the last year – it’ll have to wait until things are back to a more normal sense.

Events

  *   I found last week’s seminar from Mafic interesting, despite being rather lightweight on any technical detail. In particular, the Q&A and discussions afterwards lasted longer than the talk itself! It was recorded, and you watch it from the link on the Our Past Seminars section of the Events page. We had 22 attendees, however there were very few C-IoT Management Group members present – I think it was just Alex (who was chairing), Nick, and Son.


  *   The next seminar is on the 14 April (first Wednesday back), on the topic of smart road transport and the opportunities and challenges there (which I suspect cuts across sensing, comms, security, AI, etc). The speaker was Chief Scientist and Research Director at TRL (the UK Transport Research Laboratory) for a couple of decades, and so I suspect will be quite enlightening! Please can I encourage you to attend, and encourage staff and students in your group to do the same. We’re running these seminars on the back of the request from the last Away Day to hold seminars around different application domains!


  *   Please send me any suggestions for future seminars (or other events). I’m currently looking to book speakers in over the summer period (June onwards – I think particularly internal PhD and postdoc researchers over the summer) up until the end of 2021.
