[C-IoT Management] Potential Speaker on IoT in Mining Industry: 11 June

Dear all,

One of the outcomes of the C-IoT Away Day was to get experts from different application domains (outside of IoT) to come and tell us about the challenges faced in their fields that IoT could potentially help with. In light of this, I'm hosting a visitor on 11 June who is a consultant for the mining industry and interested in IoT and sensor development (see bullet points below). His interests seem to cover sensor development through IoT devices/networks through data analytics, comms, security and ML - i.e. pretty much everything we do.

I haven't had any previous contact with him, but he would appear to be someone worth speaking to in this context (PhD from Camborne School of Mines, Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Mining and Metals, worked in the industry a long time, etc).

I'm going to propose that he gives a presentation to the Centre while he's here about the problems and challenges in the industry/application domain, but wanted to check that we'd have some relevant people to attend first!? If you're interested in attending, please can you let me know TODAY any times that you could or couldn't do on the 11 June, and I'll do my best to avoid scheduling the presentation for then. If you'd also like to meet with him while he's here, please let me know (if not, there'll be opportunities to discuss after the presentation if it lights any lightbulbs).

As context:
"

*                    I am involved in seeking various options to enable new mining and processing systems;

*                    In mining we struggle to gain information about the material we are treating or processing, either due to the environment or just the variability of the source material;

* We apply macro sensors where possible to measure metal content, rates, moisture, size distribution of particles etc, but can the nano/micro world offer more options ?

* Increasingly we are looking at lower impact mining and processing, so how can we use embedded sensors or distributed nano sensors to gather and relay data from within mining systems (such as in-situ leaching), can we add micro sensors to slurries/fluids to gain more data?

* Can we use nano/micro for tracking material through processes?

* What are the options for in-place analysis using sensors?

* What distributed comms can be used? and what are the capabilities?

* What are the security issues with these micro comms networks
"
