PEER Economics Research: Final Report now available at<br>

The PEER Economics Research Team headed by Professor Paola Dubini, ASK<br>
Research Center, Bocconi University, Milan, Italy has completed the<br>
economics research commissioned by PEER.<br>
<br>
PEER (Publishing and the Ecology of European Research) is<br>
investigating the effects of the large-scale, systematic depositing of<br>
authors' final peer-reviewed manuscripts (so called Green Open Access<br>
or stage-two research output) on reader access, author visibility, and<br>
journals, as well as on the broader ecology of European research.<br>
<br>
The PEER Economics Research Team addressed this issue from an economic<br>
perspective and investigated the effect of large-scale deposit on<br>
scholarly research publication and dissemination (sharing of research<br>
outputs) beginning with the analysis of publishers and institutions<br>
managing repositories and their sustainability.<br>
<br>
In contrast to most of the existing literature, this study associates<br>
costs with specific activities performed by key actors involved in<br>
research registration, certification, dissemination and digital<br>
management and analyses actual cost structures of individual<br>
organizations.<br>
<br>
The resulting report presents a number of important findings and<br>
observations including:<br>
<br>
* providing a comparison of cost structures for publishers and repositories<br>
<br>
* identifing 'make or buy' decisions available to publishers and<br>
repositories and how these affect cost structures<br>
<br>
* describing how the ecology of scholarly publishing exhibits<br>
characteristics of multi-sided market competition in which<br>
sustainability and competition for resources and reputation affects<br>
open access journals, repositories and subscription based publishers.<br>
