[BOAI] eLife Latest: The costs of publishing

All the honorable academic publishers will try to relate price to costs; however, capitalistic firms do not work that way: price has almost nothing to do with costs; price has to do with what the "market" will bear. And if the company is publicly traded, this is even a legal imperative.

Documenting actual costs is commendable, but it will never convince the management of a capitalistic firm to pay attention to this element except to muddy the waters and generate cognitive fog.

Dear All,

I thought you might be interested in our latest blog post about publishing costs at eLife.

The data shows that a selective journal can sustain itself with a mid-range publication fee.

For the full details, please see our post at https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Felifesciences.org%2Finside-elife%2F719e655d%2Felife-latest-the-costs-of-publishing&data=01%7C01%7Cboai-forum%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7Cc3ef354edca44e1a990208d7d1a17e36%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=CqhGEj32oCzTDj%2B4pGa7dafU0y%2FpwpsxlJS1TypRBDA%3D&reserved=0<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Felifesciences.org%2Finside-elife%2F719e655d%2Felife-latest-the-costs-of-publishing&data=01%7C01%7Cboai-forum%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7Cc3ef354edca44e1a990208d7d1a17e36%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0&sdata=CqhGEj32oCzTDj%2B4pGa7dafU0y%2FpwpsxlJS1TypRBDA%3D&reserved=0>.

We emphasise that data on costs are not only valuable for their relationship to publication fees. Transparency around the real costs of publishing is a critical part of what we need to define financial models for the future – models that are globally accessible and ensure the vibrancy of research communication, evaluation and curation.

If you'd like more information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks, and I hope everyone's keeping well.

Best wishes,

Emily
