This was the paragraph in question relevant to BOAI from the article at
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/08/2012820102749246453.html on
the current hiring of adjunct professors:

In addition to teaching, academics conduct research and publish, but
they are not paid for this work either. Instead, all proceeds go to
for-profit academic publishers, who block academic articles from the
public through exorbitant download and subscription fees, making
millions for themselves in the process. If authors want to make their
research public, they have to pay the publisher an average of $3000 per
article. Without an institutional affiliation, an academic cannot access
scholarly research without paying, even for articles written by the
scholar itself.

It is certainly this retired professor but continuing scholar's lament
amidst primary sources who has put all her research on line herself in
order to share it with other scholars globally but who cannot access
even review articles of her own published books or references to her
articles in others' articles. It is an abuse and unjust exploitation by
commercial others of one's copyright (copyleft) and intellectual property.
