ALA, ACRL Comment on Public Access to Federally Funded Research; Encourage
Members to Comment****
** **
Today, the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of
College and Research Libraries (ACRL) submitted comments (available at
http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/issues/scholcomm/ala_acrl_rfi_response1-12.pdf)
in response to the request for information issued November 3, 2011, by
the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), online at
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-11-04/html/2011-28623.htm. We
recommended approaches for ensuring long-term stewardship and broad public
access to the peer-reviewed scholarly publications that result from
federally funded scientific research. ALA and ACRL have long believed that
ensuring public access to the fruits of federally funded research is a
logical, feasible, and widely beneficial goal.****

We encourage ALA and ACRL members to submit their own detailed comments to
OSTP, either as individuals or on behalf of their libraries, community
colleges, colleges, or universities. Responses are due January 2, 2012.

ACRL is a division of the American Library Association (ALA), representing
more than 12,000 academic and research librarians and interested
individuals. ACRL is the only individual membership organization in North
America that develops programs, products and services to meet the unique
needs of academic and research librarians. Its initiatives enable the
higher education community to understand the role that academic libraries
play in the teaching, learning and research environments. ACRL is on the
Web at http://www.acrl.org/, Facebook at
http://www.facebook.com/ala.acrland Twitter at @ala_acrl.
