The Ifremer Research Institute launched its institutional
Repository (Archimer) in 2005. In an article (in French) published in
Liinc em Revista, v.4, n.2, setembro 2008, p. 196 - 217 -
http://www.ibict.br/liinc , we compared the development of HAL (the French
centralized archive) and Archimer. Our results showed that Ifremer’s
self-archiving policy resulted in 80% of its research output being made Open
Access (OA) within 3 years of the launching of its repository. Please see:

Now in 2011, Ifremer and its repository Archimer are once again at the OA
forefront in France and probably also globally. The resourceful way
the Archimer team is systematically taking advantage of OA and its many
technical possibilities is quite remarkable, as described in the following
article by Merceur et al (in French) :
Merceur Frederic, Le Gall Morgane, Salaün Annick. *La bibliométrie : un
nouveau cap pour une archive institutionnelle *

Here is the translation of the conclusion section (6):
*Archimer today appears to have become essential for measuring the
scientific and technical output and productivity of Ifremer (the French
Institute for Oceanographic Research).*
*
*
*With the help of Archimer, a large portion of Ifremer's document output is
becoming centralized. This success represents a recognition of Ifremer's
documentation service, which is evolving new functions as some of its
traditional functions are in rapid decline (e.g., paper-based fund
management services, public reading room reception services). Archimer's
success is based particularly on the fact that the new system is providing
benefits for all players at Ifremer:*
*
*
*-- For Ifremer researchers today, Archimer, with more than 10,000
full-text documents, is a significant information source, particularly for
the internal gray literature. In addition, the detailed usage and uptake
statistics Archimer provides demonstrate to Ifremer researchers why it is in
their interest to continue to deposit their research. *
*
*
*-- Laboratories and research groups have effective export capabilities to
generate, quickly and simply, bibliographies of their group's work for
integration into activity reports, research evaluation, or posting on the
web.*
*
*
*-- The management of Ifremer has in Archimer a reliable source of
bibliometric data on the institute's research productivity, accessible at
any time. *
*
*
*The success of the Archimer project also derives from the fact that it
integrates multiple functions: Using the same tool we manage the
preservation, the showcasing and the bibliometric analysis of Ifremer's
scientific and technical output. Each component contributes to the success
of the other two.*
