*New Journal of Physics and Helmholtz Association announce open access
funding arrangement*

The Helmholtz Association and New Journal of Physics (NJP) have today signed
a funding agreement to cover article publication charges for all authors
affiliated to any of the Helmholtz Research Centres who publish with NJP.
The initial term of the agreement will extend until the end of 2011.

"The libraries of the Helmholtz Association fully share the view that open
access is a substantial part of the future of scientific publishing. This
agreement with NJP represents one further step in this direction," says Dr.
Martin Köhler, Head of the Central Library of the Deutsches
Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY).

"We are very proud to receive the endorsement of a research association with
the stature of the Helmholtz Association" said Dr Tim Smith, Senior
Publisher, at IOP Publishing. "We are looking forward to working with
researchers at its member institutes to maximize the benefits for them of
publishing with NJP."

Launched in 1998 by the Institute of Physics and Deutsche Physikalische
Gesellschaft, NJP was the first open-access journal to cover the whole of
physics. Now established as one of the leading journals in physics, NJP has
an Impact Factor of 3.31 and every month articles in the journal are
downloaded over 80,000 times by readers in more than 180 countries.

NJP's prime objective is to serve the whole physics community by providing
the widest possible dissemination of peer-reviewed, cutting-edge research,
and removing financial barriers for readers worldwide.

*DPG*
2. The German Physical Society (DPG) with a tradition extending back to 1845
is the largest physical society in the world with more than 59,000 members.
The DPG sees itself as the forum and mouthpiece for physics and is a
non-profit organisation that does not pursue financial interests. It
supports the sharing of ideas and thoughts within the scientific community,
fosters physics teaching and would also like to open a window to physics for
all those with a healthy curiosity. Go to

*Helmholtz Association*
3. The Helmholtz Association contributes to solving major challenges facing
society, science and industry with top scientific achievements in six
research areas: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies,
Structure of Matter, and Aeronautics, Space and Transport. With more than
31,000 employees in 17 research centres and an annual budget of
approximately 3,3 billion euros, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s
largest scientific organisation. The Helmholtz Association was one of the
initial signatories of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access in 2003. Go to

4. IOP Publishing provides publications through which leading-edge
scientific research is distributed worldwide. IOP Publishing is central to
the Institute of Physics (IOP), a not-for-profit society. Any financial
surplus earned by IOP Publishing goes to support science through the
activities of IOP.

Beyond our traditional journals programme, we make high-value scientific
information easily accessible through an ever-evolving portfolio of
community websites, magazines, conference proceedings and a multitude of
electronic services. Focused on making the most of new technologies, we’re
continually improving our electronic interfaces to make it easier for
researchers to find exactly what they need, when they need it, in the format
that suits them best. Go to
