*Springer and Max Planck Society sign agreement*

Berlin / Munich, 8 March 2010

The Max Planck Society and Springer have reached an agreement which allows
the scientists working at the 78 Max Planck Institutes and research
facilities across Germany access to content on SpringerLink, which currently
comprises over 2,000 journals, to several book series and to
SpringerMaterials. The agreement covers access for 2010 and 2011.

The pilot project, begun in 2008 in conjunction with the last access
agreement, which allowed researchers at the MPS institutes to publish using
Springer Open Choice, has ended, but both parties have committed to ongoing
discussions with respect to coming to a further agreement on alternative
publishing models.

“We are pleased with our continued partnership with Springer and the mature
basis we have reached together. While the new agreement separates
subscription content from Open Choice again, we continue to be committed to
exploring new models that reflect the changes in scholarly communication,”
said Ralf Schimmer, Head of the Scientific Information Provision Department
at the Max Planck Digital Library.

“We value the opportunity of providing MPS researchers access to our content
on SpringerLink. The pilot project for open access publishing has given
both parties useful insights regarding alternative publishing models, and
these insights will be the basis for our ongoing talks for a further
agreement in this area,” said Peter Hendriks, Springer’s President of Global
STM Publishing and Marketing.
